My recipe for “cutting the cord” of cable TV: Youtube TV tv.youtube.com $35/mo supplemented by rentals/purchases from Google Play which is basically anything you would ever want to watch. Movies as they are released, shows from all networks.

I shipped back Optimum cable boxes ($10/mo ea) and replaced them with Chromecast ($35/ea one time)

Now my phone is my remote. Wife’s phone is her remote. We can have 6 individual accounts & run separate TVs for the same rate. Also, can run this from any PC in the house.

Anything else you want can be added a la carte (sports, hbo, etc) for about $10/mo

I never lose my phone but lost that remote control 10x a day haha + I hate Optimum for years of shady practices, constant added horeshit fees and overall shitty service + I get to get rid of the big ugly boxes, remotes & wires.

Had to keep the internet $65/mo but I bet Google figures that out soon too.

Old bill $200+ per month + rentals + randomly added on fees + calls to support to remove fees + more fees and a little extra bullshit.

New bill $100 per month + rentals

Warning: If you are “tech challenged” this is a bad option 😜

Note: YoutubeTV just added TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network and several others and the price stayed the same!

Here is the current channel lineup in CT:

I’d also like to note that YoutubeTV is available on all mobile devices, tablets, desktop PCs and TVs, simultaneously in the same house and that the DVR capability is the best. No limits! No “you ran out of space”.

I have been considering this option as well, we do love our live TV though.

      How is the live TV?

What about data usage? Have you noticed your usage increase, if so, how much of an increase?

In total, how much did you spend on cutting the cord?

The live TV is AWESOME. The way you navigate it on your mobile and send it to the TV is super intuitive and easy.

I bought 2 Chromecasts @ $35/ea and it’s $35/mo for YoutubeTV. My “cable bill” is still $65/mo because I need my cable modem/high speed internet. You cannot cast with cellular data, you need broadband, wireless in-house.

We need our high speed internet as well, since both of us work from home. Our cable bill for tv alone is around $80 per month and I don’t even watch half the channels. My wife’s biggest concern is will the data usage go up. I will do some more digging.

      Thanks Mike…

Did something similar, cut all cable tv, phone, dvr from my internet bill.  Between the bill & electricity saved (over $80.00 a month), I was saving close to $300.00 a month!

Does your ISP throttle or charge for data? Ours is still unlimited and fast as hell for $65/mo and we can stream 2,3 at once and it doesn’t slow down. We have Optimum in CT, their TV is horrific but Internet is stable and fast. I have been on it since day one broadband came to town, about 20 years ago now!

YoutubeTV $35/mo – no DVR charge, no cable box, remotes and all the other bullshit. Love it too – it’s not even a compromise it’s actually better

Working on this for mom and dad.  (Me too, since we are using her dad’s login for ESPN, History Channel, etc. and he is looking to cut costs as well).

Trying to decide between: Roku Stick (like the selection of apps, and this is the one we personally have), Amazon Fire (have Amazon Prime, but haven’t looked into it), Chromecast (again, haven’t looked into this yet), and not sure of any others.

As for the Streaming TV:  considering Sling (looks like it has a great selection), YouTubeTV is not offered in our area, and not sure of any others.

Ugh! I didn’t know YoutubeTV wasn’t available “everywhere”. It’s so easy and user friendly IF you are accustomed to using your cell phone regularly. I really like it a ton. BTW welcome to the forum!

Yep.  I looked into it recently.  I believe it is in larger cities – like Louisville, KY – but not in our area, about 2 hours away.  I tried to sign up, but it shut me down.  I’m definitely used to the phone, but parents not so much.  They’re gonna need some training on this.  And thanks!  Hope to be around for a while.

Good to know and yea for parents who aren’t techy! They are better off staying old school or you become the point of contact when “MY TV DOESN’T WORK” 🙂

Well, see – that’s the problem.  I already am the tech contact.  And we’ve been using their login for the Roku’s ESPN app and History Channel, etc.  They are wanting to trim that outrageous bill down.  It’s either fix this now, or move them to the old folks home and eat up that tiny inheritance.  LOL.  And I’m scared to ask what THAT box is!!

I don’t watch sports but this is the 3rd time I got a note line this since I’ve been using the service

We have PS View. It’s about $60/Mo and we use our Amazon Fire TV/Firesticks. It’s not bad. We liked DirecTVs service but if you have any kinks, they do not have support yet to work them out.

thats the shit part, I only watch sports (or whatever Housewives show is on Bravo at the time) so I bet I don’t watch more than 20 total channels and I have a $200+ DTV bill.  I have this sports bar theme TV wall in the basement so I can watch 5 streams at once spread across 8 TV’s down there via a Matrix switch.  A couple years ago if you wanted the hockey, NFL ticket, etc I didnt have a lot of options, but now it seems like you can still get all the sports packages for all games without having a cable subscription.  I just wonder how many streams you can watch of that at the same time.  Like, for MLB could I watch 5 different games at once? or will it only stream to one device at a time?

That is a good question. In order to run 5 games at once via the MLB app you’d probably need to “cast” via Chromecast from a  web browser each stream. I think for that specific purpose you might need to keep the cable. YoutubeTV has the capacity to splice into 6 accounts at once but not from the same device.
