I know this is a basic question but my boot screens happen so fast I can’t see how to get into BIOS. I read an article about SHIFT / SHUT DOWN and SHIFT F2 on boot but nothing is working. I have been hooking up my old workstation for my kid to use for gaming, coding & youtubing. I loaded it up with 32GB RAM – 4GB X 8. My RAM was running crazy hot (95-100C) so I bought a cooling fan and it dropped the temp 35+ degrees but I realized the RAM is DDR2 533mhz and the system is set for 667mhz. I suspect this is why it’s running so hot? Or is this just normal?

This is the fan, it was easy to install. When it’s on it looks like Minion glasses haha!

It could be F1, F2, F10, Del, Esc

and yes, overclocked ram will make it run hotter, it should be 50 – 60 celcius

50-60 without a fan or is a fan pretty common these days? It runs 63C-65C on idle, 67-68C when in light use and it can go as high as 75-77 when a game like Star Wars Battlefront is being played. I have HWMonitor installed https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html to keep an eye on it.

I was all proud of my research & installation haha I am becoming interested in building PCs as a hobby, and for introducing my son to it. Gives him a lot of insight to see me inside his PC. I installed a PCI card yesterday that gave him UBB 3.0 ports. He currently only had USB 2. (We have a screen capture/game capture device coming that needed USB 3.0.)

I can’t get in, why did they make it up to the PC manufacturer? Not sure why I had to even research it, there should just be “the way”! I’ll keep rebooting and hitting random keys 🙂

model of the workstation, or any identifying marks on the motherboard would help

It’s an old BOXX. The motherboard is: http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/xeon1333/5400/x7dwa-n.cfm

I don’t mind that it’s overclocked I just don’t want the thing to be dangerous. I think 60ish C is a good zone but to me it feels hot to the touch and makes me a bit uneasy. It was hot as fuck w/o that fan.

Well, apparently that motherboard doesn’t support that ram,

and to enter you bios screen, you have to hit the delete key

but I don’t think that will help you, since DDR2 automatically runs at 667 on that motherboard.

AHHHH got it!! Thanks man! That explains the heat and why it was set to 667. I’ll maybe even buy a 2nd fan to take it down even more but it runs stable and is really speedy with 8 x 4gb sticks. This was the “last upgrade” for this old beast.
